Slashdot Says:

"Slashdot was originally created in September of 1997 by Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda. Today it is owned by OSTG, which, in turn is owned by VA Software.
Slashdot is run primarily by me and by Jeff "Hemos" Bates, who posts stories and manages other sites for OSTG.
Slashcode is wrangled and various other deeds of a technical nature are committed by the OSTG Slashteam.
Editorial responsibilities are still handled by Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, along with the rest of the Slashdot Authors."

Dave Earley Says:

I guess Slashdot doesn't have a lot to say about itself.  It is a great bookmarking site, which has become very popular and boasts the best PageRank of any social site to date.

The name is a bit awkward, but there is a reason behind the madness.  Rob thought it would be funny to name the site in a humorous way.  Spell out the full url, go ahead:  http://slashdot.org  You should have come up with slash, slash, slash, dot, dot, org.  Nice, huh?  Although Rob ends up wanting to kick himself every time he has to spell it out for others.

Slashdot is a bit different from other social sites, not just because of the name, but because you either submit a full article or a bookmark.  I have noticed that the full articles get some serious views, so either way it's a win, win.  However, submission of a full article needs to pass review in order to be accepted, whereas a bookmark goes right through.

Not only that, but the full articles are the only ones that have a chance to make front page.  To see bookmarks, you need to scroll down to the bookmarks tab, click on it, and then you will see a page full of the latest submissions.  It's not front page, but it's still a good deal.

Doing the friend thing is a little more difficult that most in Slashdot.  You actually have to find a story, find the submitter, and then go to the submitters profile.  This doesn't sound too complicated, but it's not as easy as most other social sites.  It actually took me awhile to even figure out you could have friends in Slashdot.  Actually, you can even have enemies.  Yikes!

The navigation could be a little bit better, but all in all, Slashdot might just be the best site in which to submit articles and bookmarks.  In the past, categories were restricted to technology, Linux, and Open Source issues, but they do have several other topics to choose from if you are going to submit an article.  Otherwise, bookmarking in Slashdot will give you some premium backlinks.
