There seems to be an undesirable amount of carbon in the air, which is taking the blame for global warming and the unpredictable weather that is happening around the world. Right now, scientists are working on extracting carbon from the air and turning it into fuel. Can this really be accomplished?
Giant tree-like towers are being created which will absorb carbon from vehicles, oil wells, industrial pollution, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, as well as deforested areas. Each tower will be able to extract one ton of carbon per day. It would take a tree a whole century to absorb an equal amount of carbon. While trees will emit carbon dioxide during metabolic activities or rotting, the carbon extracting towers will not.
The carbon that these towers capture could be stored underground for industrial uses. It is possible to turn the stored carbon into a liquid form, and thus using it as motor fuel.
It may be possible to extract as much as one million tons of carbon from the air each day, or even more. With little effort these towers could be set up anywhere, especially in areas that are full of carbon dioxide. The towers will come in different sizes, and should be available a few years from now.
This method will most likely not solve our alternative energy needs alone, but could prove to be very helpful by canceling out much of our man made and natural pollution.
What do you think about reprocessing carbon from the air and using it as a fuel? Let me know in my alternative energy forum.
