The government of Abu Dhabi has created the Masdar Initiative in order to create a place that is self-sustaining and takes living to the next level.

Innovators, incubators, developers, researchers, pioneers, solution providers, and some of the best that the world has to offer will come together to create, work, and live in Masdar City.  Construction will take 7 years to complete, and it will come with a price tag of $20 billion.  Masdar City will be built in 7 phases and will be designed like traditional Arabic urban architecture, combined with modern alternative energy technology.

Masdar City will be linked to surrounding communities because it will be directly located in the middle of Abu Dhabi's infrastructure.  Although, to be carbon free itself, the city will not have any cars.  It will be completely friendly to pedestrians, who will only need to travel a maximum of 200 meters to reach any public transportation.  The total area of the city will be about 6 million square metres, which will include a City Headquarters, a University, an Innovation Center as well as economic zones.

Masdar City will require technological breakthroughs from the efforts of experts in various fields in order to be truly sustainable.  Firstly, a large solar photovoltaic power plant will be constructed for a source of central energy.  After that, urban growth will begin taking place.  Eventually the city will expand and the surrounding area will be used for wind farms, plantations, research fields, and photovoltaic farms.

The hope is that eventually Masdar City will become self-sustaining which will be a world's first, and may even provoke plans for more cities if this one is successful.
