The most successful type of filmed entertainment today is the blockbuster movie. The smaller independent film can be reasonably successful in their own right, even to rival the blockbusters.

The bigger and more extravagant the better for these movies. The stories are usually full of action and follow high production values. The stakes are always high in these movies, and the hero usually has everything at stake.

One of the most important techniques that makes a Hollywood film hit is the double storyline. That means, it has a character story line and an action story line. In it's simplest form, a personal story and a case to be solved. A character line is where we see a character developing or growing. A case or an action line is something the plot develops into a complete story.

Since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry the blockbuster movie has been an ever present form of entertainment. Nobody knows how a particular movie becomes a box-office success. This is a phenomena that has completely allured movie producers, directors and studios for many years.

Alongside the Hollywood studio system is the Independent filmmaking scene. These are produced out of the system, and are financed, and possibly distributed without the major movie studio's involvement. The independent cinema has grown considerably over the years, for many technical and business reasons.

Because of the extremely high cost of big-budget productions, the studios have to be very conservative with their spending. Quite often these studios will co-finance these movies with other film production companies. The studios will rarely produce a movie without a well-know actor in place, especially for lead roles. Films directors will most probably never get the chance to work on these films without the necessary industry experience.

Before the advent of digital alternatives, the cost of professional film equipment and stock was also a hurdle to being able to produce, direct, or star in a traditional studio film.

High resolution digital cameras are becoming a lot more common, and this is breaking down barriers that once stood in a filmmakers way. The necessary tools for the whole filmmaking process can now be installed on an everyday computer. The price of movies has dropped considerably in recent years.

Even though it's become much easier to produce and edit a whole movie on your PC, it is still difficult to find the necessary distribution. Filmmakers still go through the film festival circuit. But even this is getting easier now because of the digital revolution.

Open content films are very much like independent films. They are produced through a collaborative process, and the source material is available through a license which allows other parties to create derivative works. These films are produced outside of the studio system, much like independent films.
