Fast food can not only be the cause of obesity but also the downfall of just about any weight loss program. The reason for this is not only because fast food is quite fatty, but also because of its convenience; not dirty dishes, no waiting, it can be eaten on the move and is more often than not delicious. Fast food can be fit into your diet but if you can do without it, you should. If you are looking for an excuse to eat fast food, you will not find it in this article. Instead you will learn how to make better decisions when you find yourself looking at a menu.

Ultimately this is a food group you should be avoiding because it contains everything that you would not want to in your stomach; lots of calories, cardboard, preservatives, nitrates etc. The trouble is that fast food is so quick and easy to come by so if you absolutely cannot resist, you should at least try to make a sensible decision and pick the not-so-bad from the very bad.

The next time you are in your favourite fast food outlet take moment to study the menu carefully. Many chains have added salads and the like to their menus and try to go for the smaller portions and maybe replace the soft drink with water.

Here are some healthy tips to select the right meal:
- Grilled items are leaner than fried items.
- Go for low fat milk, water, or diet sodas rather than regular sodas or milk shakes.
- Whenever you can, add some fruit and veggies.
- Beware of the creamy salad dressings.
- In case of HUGE hunger, go for a regular portion with a side salad instead of the biggest size burger or pizza.
- Instead of mayonnaise go for tomato sauce or mustard.
- Salad instead of fries.
- Add extra veggies instead of meat or cheese when ordering extras for your pizza.
- Choose leaner meats like chicken or turkey.

Most fast food chains list the nutritional facts of their products on their websites; the exact amount of calories, fat, protein and so on in each product. When visiting the website, just look for the nutritional section.

The websites of Foodfacts and Fatcalories are also very useful. You can find the exact amount of nutrition of every single item on the menus of the biggest chains in the world and compare them to each other.

Fast food is a reality and every franchise is continuously trying to entice you to indulge. There is no avoiding it, but some fast food once or twice a month never killed anyone, so don't be too hard on yourself when you decide to indulge. Just stay sensible and make smart choices.
