Should you pay attention to pagerank?

In Google, pagerank supposedly measures the importance of a website.

Many people only look at the pagerank, while evaluating sites that they want to link back to them.

A lot of time is spent trying to improve pagerank, while not considering if their actions will actually help their ranking.

No one knows how much Google takes pagerank into account while calculating algorithms.

Sites with little pagerank can be found at the top of the search ranking, while sites with high pagerank can be found on page 4, or worse.

It's hard to tell, exactly what pagerank uses as criteria to measure authority of a site. The FBI, IRS, and FEMA, have pagerankings of 8 out of 10. How much more authority is there than these?

Web masters can steal another site's pagerank, and use it to manipulate their own pagerank.

A lot of link sellers, sell links based on their pagerank, and that pagerank has often been artificially inflated.

You should pay attention to pagerank, but it's not the only thing that you should keep your eye on. Consider the actual rank of a site, and how well its content relates to your site's content.

Look for commercial sites that sell things that go well with your product, or service, and link to them, instead of businesses that have nothing to do with your business.

Look for web pages containing content that closely relates to the content on your site. If an information page has an article relating to your product, or service, that's where you would want your link. You want links coming from pages with content that is focused on yours.

Links from general information sites can be a good thing, if those sites get heavy amounts of traffic, and a good search engine ranking. It's more effective, however, to link to a web page with content relateable to yours, even if the search engine ranking of that site is lower, and it gets less traffic.

When considering link sources; think as a visitor would think. If visitors don't find what they are expecting when they click on a link to your site, then they will be disappointed, and leave.

Make sure that you have valuable information, and something to offer your visitors.

It takes time to build a network of free links, but the benefits are huge: A better search engine ranking, and quality traffic.
