Social Media Marketing (SMM) is becoming more popular each day, as it should.  SMM, or social bookmarking, whatever you like to call it, is nothing less than an excellent way to increase your rankings in the search engines, as well as your overall traffic.  However, there have been some questions about one social site recently, and that is namely; StumbleUpon.

Is StumbleUpon increasing your traffic?

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that you should be checking your stats and keywords pretty much everyday, which you can do easily with Google Analytics.  If you are a regular StumbleUpon user, perhaps upon looking at your stats you would see spikes in your chart that appear to be the result of StumbleUpon traffic?  Have you noticed any CTR, any sales, or anything at all of value from all of this traffic that is supposedly coming from StumbleUpon?

Allow me to suggest to you that the traffic you appear to be receiving from StumbleUpon is, in fact, inflated traffic.  Call it fake traffic if you like.  Take a look at the following image and you will see how StumbleUpon is supposed to work:

As you probably know, when you stumble posts, vote on them, and comment on them, these posts would tend to go viral, as you can see from chart.   If you are like my good friend, Bart the Bear, who is also the reigning Social Media Ninja of 2008, then you should be getting plenty of votes (thumbs up) as well as some decent comments on your specific posts to StumbleUpon.  The StumbleUpon tool bar should then take notice of your posts and make sure that other stumblers see them as well.  Upon viewing your stats, you should also notice a spike in your traffic for these specific posts.

Below is another image, this time showing spikes in traffic caused by the StumbleUpon toolbar:

This graph was posted in the 24hourwealth work at home forum by Bart the Bear, which shows some of his stats for this year along with spikes due to the StumbleUpon toolbar.  Before the month of February, you will notice several spikes, one of them apparently amounting to about 7,000 visits.  That seems like incredible traffic from the work of just one site right?  Well, this is what Bart the Bear had to say about these traffic spikes from StumbleUpon:  "The spikes prior to January 2008 were from Stumbleupon activities. I found this site to be pretty worthless other than generating a very low Alexa rank. There was no income from this traffic at all. Just a lot of fun."

Just a lot of fun!  That's it!

No CTR at all.  Just a ton of people passing through the StumbleUpon toolbar.  No one clicking on any ads, or buying anything, just some good old surfing going on here.

I noticed the same thing the last time that I posted to my Stumble Blog.  In a 24 hour period I received apparently over 1,000 visitors to one of my articles after submitting it to StumbleUpon.  However, I also had no clicks, no sales, no nothing.  Now I don't know about you, but I don't see the likelihood of over 1,000 people passing through my site, and not one of them clicking on something.  I just don't see that happening.

Go ahead and have some fun using StumbleUpon if you like, otherwise, if you would like some real results use the "dofollow" sites that can be found in Posttoaster, as well as any other social sites that give you some actual backlinks in Google.

How has your experience been with StumbleUpon?  Let me know in my Social Media Marketing Forum.
